On 14 June 2011, the IASI instrument on MetOp-A satellite detected sulphur dioxide over East Africa and the Middle East. The sulphur dioxide plume came from the Nabro volcano in Eritrea. This information enabled Captain Klaus Sievers to plan a trouble-free flight for the next day.
