ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano installing the FASES experiment in Europe's space laboratory Columbus on the International Space Station. FASES examines emulsions - small droplets suspended in liquids. Studying the stability and characteristics of emulsion droplets without gravity getting in the way of the observations will help us better these types of liquids. An accurate model of emulsion dynamics would be used by industry to improve their products.
Installing the equipment took over three hours but running the experiment is an automatic process. The hardware arrived on the International Space Station on ESA's supply and support ferry ATV Albert Einstein.
