Subject to the environmental strains of recurrent drought and widespread poverty, rural communities in Niger are particularly susceptible to fluctuations in harvests and climate change. IFAD aims to improve food security by establishing food and grain banks, allowing families to borrow grain when food is scarce and to buy it back when crops are replenished.
