Land degradation in the Darfur region

Vegetation degradation (red) and increase (green) along the Sudan–Chad border caused by the Darfur conflict. The increase in vegetation is linked to village destruction and forced population displacement, leading to abandonment of agriculture and cattle breeding. Some of the red areas coincide with the location of refugee camps in neighbouring Chad, showing overuse of natural resources, such as the collection of firewood.
