Sea-surface temperature patterns captured on16 August 2011 by the Advance Along Track Scanning Radiometer carried on Envisat. This image of the western Mediterranean Sea reveals a wealth of detailed patterns associated with complex surface currents. The Sentinel-3 Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer is set to provide enhanced continuity of such images for Copernicus services. Sea-surface temperature and land-surface temperature maps are fundamental for evidence-based climate monitoring and numerical weather prediction applications. The instrument will be used to monitor wildfires using specially designed detectors.
