Testing astronaut jetpack

NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless became the first untethered spacewalker while testing a new backpack in 1984. After testing inside Space Shuttle Challenger’s payload bay, Bruce ventured almost 100 m away with no safety tether.

He used the new nitrogen-propelled backpack to return safely. On most spacewalks, astronauts stay tethered to their spaceship at all times.
