Soil moisture information from the SMOS satellite were used to detect areas of drought over North America on 1 May 2016, the day wildfires broke out in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. The US Department of Agriculture uses SMOS soil moisture information to predict the short-term impact of drought on vegetation health and agricultural yield. This information is also helpful for detecting areas susceptible to wildfires.
