Hardness test

The ESA–RAL Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory on Harwell Campus, UK, assesses new material processes, joining techniques and 3D printing technologies for application in space.

Some materials are put through experiments that test their mechanical properties. For example, a sample is placed in a hardness machine with an indenter to apply pressure. The deformations are examined to deduce the material’s hardness.
