Comet changes: scarp retreat in Anubis

Distinctive changes in the smooth regions in Anubis on the large lobe of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko were noticed following the comet’s most active period. In this region the changes are seen in the retreat of scarp edges at the top and bottom of this image set. In the bottom, the change is particularly noticeable by comparing the scarp edge against the two nearby boulders.

Additional images taken in July and August 2015, around perihelion, indicate that the scarp at the top of the image retreated at a rate of 5.4 m/day. In total, the scarp here retreated by about 35 m, while that at the bottom of the image retreated by 50 m.

The images were taken by Rosetta’s OSIRIS camera on 4 December 2014 (left) and 14 June 2016 (right), with resolutions of 0.4 m/pixel and 0.5 m/pixel, respectively.
