A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Kermanshah Province of Iran on 12 November 2017. The International Charter Space and Major Disasters was activated the following day and data from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission were used to generate a map of east–west ground displacement over the area affected. This is a mountainous region of the country and rescue operations were disrupted by landslides. At the time, almost 400 people were reported to have been killed.
