Blood Moon

This image was captured during the 27-28 September 2015 total lunar eclipse from ESA's European Space Astronomy Centre near Madrid, Spain.

Eclipses like these are sometimes called a 'Blood Moon' because of the reddish hue the Moon takes on. This effect is caused by some sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere and still reaching the lunar surface.
