Gravity tractor for asteroid deflection

The ‘gravity tractor’ method of asteroid deflection involves flying a spacecraft close enough to an asteroid so its gravitational attraction gradually pulls the body off course. The spacecraft would be equipped with altimeters and ion engines to stay just away from the asteroid, and nudge its orbit as required.
