Macarena Garcia Marin, ESA scientist for Webb’s MIRI instrument
What is your role in Webb?
I work on the calibration and operations of Webb’s MIRI instrument.
Why are you excited about Webb?
Everything! Webb will investigate the local and distant Universe, with a resolution and sensitivity never achieved before. But most of all I’m excited about the unexpected discoveries and surprises we will find.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Joining ESA to support the Webb mission.
Did you have a role model during your career, and if so, how did they inspire you?
Yes, I’ve been always been inspired by Gillian Wright, the Principal Investigator for MIRI. I’ve been part of the MIRI team for many years, she’s been always a role model and I have learned a lot from her.
What advice could you offer to young people thinking of pursuing a career in STEM?
Go ahead! Hard work, determination and an open and flexible mindset will take you places.
The 2021 International Women’s Day theme is “Choose to Challenge”. What are the biggest challenges you’ve fought to overcome in your career?
At the beginning of my career the uncertainties about the future, and whether or not I should pursue a scientific/technical path. I’m glad I did follow it!
