The Beijing South Train Station in the Fengtai District, Beijing, can be seen in this image captured on 3 May 2016 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission. The station is one of the city’s largest stations, and is one of the largest in Asia. It serves as the terminus for high-speed trains on the Beijing–Tianjin intercity railway and Beijing–Shanghai high-speed Railway which can reach speeds up to 350 km/h.
The station was built from more than 60 000 tonnes of steel and more than 490 000 cubic metres of concrete. To understand the enormity of the station, the main hall in the centre is big enough to accommodate a Boeing 747 aircraft, and the covered surface area of the roof is about the size of 20 football fields.
