Aphrodite Terra; currently on display in the exhibition ‘Who wants to live in a world without magic’ at TENT Rotterdam, curated by Katayoun Arian.) The four, coloured landscapes are ceramic 3D models of various mountain ridges on Venus with poetic names like the ‘Ovda Region’ and ‘Aphrodite Terra’. Here, Anna Hoetjes uses colour as a means to animate scientific visualisations of wavelengths from space. The use of colour in this work also indicates an often hidden contribution of female labour in the advancement of contemporary astronomy. The glaze on the tiles of Aphrodite Terra references spectroscopy – a technique used by the first female astronomers.
