NASA astronaut Raja Chari and ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer get to grips with the Retinal Diagnostics technology demonstration at ESA's European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany. They are two of the first astronauts to use specially-adapted ocular scanner in orbit. The retinal images they take during flight will feed into an AI (artificial intelligence) model that researchers hope will be used to automatically detect changes in astronaut eyesight during future missions.
Young researcher from ESA's Spaceship EAC initiative, Eóin Tuohy, is the subject in this instance. He is part of the ESA/DLR team behind the technology demonstration During his traineeship funded by the Irish Research Council, he helped adapt an ocular lens used for routine clinical diagnostic operations, for use with a tablet in space.
