MTG-I1 is the first satellite to be launched in Europe's Meteosat Third Generation programme. From geostationary orbit, MTG-I1, which boasts two new highly-sensitive instruments – a Flexible Combined Imager and a Lightning Imager – is set to take weather forecasting to the next level.
The complete MTG mission will comprise two MTG-I satellites and one MTG-S satellites working in tandem. In full operations, one of the MTG-I satellites scans the full Earth disc, including Europe and Africa, every 10 minutes, while the other provides local area coverage, for example covering only Europe but with a faster repeat cycle.
