Preparing for space-based solar power

In a new call for ideas on the Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP), the Preparation element of ESA's Basic Activities is soliciting ideas for research activities to address the environmental and socioeconomical challenges posed by space-based solar power.

Some key questions that need answers are:

• Can space-based solar power be implemented in a way that is safe for both the public and for industry?
• Can we ensure there is no negative impact on ecosystems?
• Will it encounter any negative effects from interaction with the atmosphere, including the charged ionosphere?
• Can we avoid interference with other critical technology, and minimise the risk imposed by external forces?
• Will space-based solar power have a net positive impact on the environment when considering its entire life cycle of deployment, and how does it compare to other energy sources?
