The first Meteosat Third Generation Sounder weather satellite, MTG-S1, has been successfully assembled and has passed its first extensive functional tests. Over the next months, the satellite will be put through a complete set of tests to simulate the conditions it will experience during liftoff and in orbit above Earth and ensure that the satellite will function correctly in the harsh environment of space.
Working alongside its MTG-I1 partner satellite, launched in November 2022, MTG-S1 will not only be used to further improve atmospheric observations for weather forecasting, but thanks to the Sentinel-4 instrument, it will also deliver information every hour to monitor air quality and pollution over Europe.
