Together with the two other robots in the Surface Avatar experiment, DLR's Bert robot is designed to a scout for future space exploration. The human-operated companion is small and nimble enough to climb terrain, making it ideal for going out and surveying an area before the other robot come to perform tasks.
ESA project astronaut Marcus Wandt took part on the Surface Avatar experiment during his Muninn mission, operated a team of robots from the International Space Station.
