New Moon image taken from the International Space Station in false colours. Andreas Mogensen took hundreds of images on 10 November 2023 with the new Moon phase approaching. These images were aligned and merged to produce a high signal-to-noise-ratio image as shown here with colours replacing intensities. The red area shows where the new Moon is illuminated by the Sun. The dark side is visible in green. A slight hint of the halo of scattered light near the sky outside the Moon’s bright side is seen in light blue. The values of intensity of the image has been heavily processed to ensure that all areas of interest are visible at the same time.
