Connectivity is the invisible fabric that binds our increasingly digital world together. Most of us have experienced the disruptions caused by slow internet or its absence in remote areas. ESA acknowledges the importance of 5G and 6G technologies in ensuring reliable and comprehensive connectivity across Europe and beyond.
Through its Space for 5G/6G and Sustainable Connectivity programme, ESA is paving the way for the next generation of global connectivity. The programme’s goal is to advance and integrate Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), which involve satellites in various orbits and HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellites), with existing terrestrial (ground) networks in order to offer top-quality connectivity for everyone, everywhere, at all times.
To make this a reality, ESA recognises the strength in bringing together experts and leaders from around the world to develop solutions that tackle challenges associated with NTN. As such, ESA has launched the NTN Forum, an international consortium of organisations across various industries to discuss, collaborate and improve 5G and 6G technologies for applications such as cybersecurity, remote connectivity and emergency response.
In July 2024, ESA hosted the NTN Forum kick-off meeting where experts, stakeholders and industry leaders participated online. The forum aims to create awareness of the opportunities in implementing NTN solutions for advanced 5G and future 6G infrastructures, advocate for their value, and promote collaboration and certification. Since its launch, the forum has grown to 288 professionals from 144 organisations across 31 countries.
The forum aims to reduce the digital divide and ensure that high-quality connectivity becomes accessible to all, particularly in underserved areas where traditional terrestrial networks have been economically unfeasible. By enabling better connectivity in remote areas, NTNs could unlock new economic opportunities, improve access to education and healthcare, and support more effective emergency response systems. The technology also enhances connectivity for maritime and aeronautical activities, as well as environmental monitoring and scientific research on a global scale.
The vision is clear: a connected future where no one is left behind. This forum represents a significant step towards a future where reliable, secure, high-speed connectivity is globally available, underscoring ESA's commitment to harnessing space technology for the benefit of all European citizens and beyond.
