Help with using ESA image archives
The ESA image archives allow you to explore a vast collection of images related to ESA’s activities.
They cover a wide range of image material, from digitised photos dating back to the early days of ESA to our latest digital images on the ongoing missions and programmes.
Two distinct sites are available, one for the general public, ‘Space in Images’ and one for the professionals, the ‘ESA Photolibrary for Professionals’.
Space in images
This section provides images suitable for everyone. The images available on this site are usually the same ones that are featured on the ESA website, on ESA articles, or shared on our social media channels.
Note that not all images published on Space in Images are copyrighted ESA, and we cannot authorise you to use images not owned by ESA. In those cases we would invite you to contact the relevant copyright owner for permission.
ESA images can be used for educational or informational purposes, following ESA's image and video usage guidelines but may not be used to state or imply the endorsement by ESA or one of its employees of a commercial product, process or service, or used in any other manner that might mislead. If recognisable persons appear in this photograph, use for commercial purposes may infringe their rights. If these photographs are to be used in advertising or any commercial promotion, layout and copy must be submitted to ESA beforehand for approval. The full copyright must be indicated.
ESA Photolibrary for Professionals
This section offers a library of high-quality images specifically for professional use (journalists, broadcasters, documentary producers, etc.).
The images are organised by album, comprehensively covering ESA missions and programmes as well as other relevant topics.
Currently relevant albums are always listed on the home-page for easy access.
Downloading these images requires registration to the ESA Photolibrary for Professionals. Once logged in, a download button will be available next to each image.
All images will be available for download in full resolution Jpg format. Tif format images can be provided on request where available.
For all information regarding the usage guidelines, please refer to the ESA image and video conditions of use.
