Tim Peake/Tim Kopra Spacewalk Live : NEW SAT Parameters

Date: Fri, Jan 15, 2016 | 12:00 - 19:00 GMT | 13:00 - 20:00 CET

Type: ESA TV Live

Format: 16:9

On Friday 15 January at 1255GMT, ESA astronaut Tim Peake and NASA astronaut Tim Kopra will exit the International Space Station to repair a power unit on the outside.

The two Tims arrived at the Space Station on 15 December and this will be their second involvement in a spacewalk: Tim Peake assisted Tim Kopra and Station commander Scott Kelly when they moved an equipment carrier on 21 December. This spacewalk (EVA) will last around six hours, with the two astronauts working closely together to replace a faulty unit.

The ESA astronaut explains: “Our primary task will be to replace a failed Solar Shunt Unit, which transfers electrical power generated by the solar panels.”

The unit is relatively easy to replace but the work must be done during periods when the space station is out of sun illumination so that the solar arrays are not generating live power. Once done, the spacewalkers will lay cables in advance of new docking ports and reinstall a valve that was removed for relocation of the Leonardo module last year.

ESA will relay coverage of the EVA in full and highlights will be posted during and afterwards on the ESA TV ftp server.
