Making Earth a better and safer place is the objective of new initiatives that ESA wishes to implement in the coming years.

One of these is a set of ‘Space Safety and Security’ activities to enhance the existing Space Situational Awareness (SSA) programme already in place.

The goal is to help protect Earth from dangers from space, like asteroids and harmful space weather, at the same time reducing risks due to hazards in space, such as artificial space debris.

In June 2018, the UNISPACE+50 conference will take place in in Vienna, bringing together the international community, and reflecting on the past and future of space activities around the world. It will be a chance to assess results following the three prior UNISPACE conferences, held in 1968, 1982 and 1999, and consider how the future course of global space cooperation can benefit everyone on Earth.

On 30 June, the world will celebrate Asteroid Day, an international day recognised by the United Nations providing a global opportunity to raise awareness of the threat posed by the numerous rocky bodies traversing space that pose an impact risk to Earth.

Since 2009, ESA has played a leading role in the international hunt for such near-Earth objects (NEO) and is currently developing cutting-edge widefield telescopes that will have the ability to scan the large swathes of sky each night.

ESA also carries out crucial analysis work as part of its Space Situational Awareness programme and coordinates with observatories and astronomers across Europe through its NEO Coordination Centre in Italy.

To celebrate Asteroid Day on 30 June, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and ESA will team up to co-produce a webcast highlighting some of the most recent activities and news related to asteroids. It will be live via esa.int/asteroidday.
