10:00:40:00 Space technology in the countryside ... 40 years ago the European Space Agency set up this satellite tracking station at Redu in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. Lying in a natural dip in the landscape, this green space was carefully chosen as the perfect spot for the task in hand: its isolation enables it to receive satellite signals without disturbance from interference. More than thirty antennas can be used to track and control satellites and test them in orbit.
10:01:14:00 Declared operational on 1st January 1968, the Redu station is mainly dedicated to satellite telecommunications programmes. In 1983, it also played a pioneering role in satellite television, monitoring and trialling EUTELSATís ECS satellite series. Today, it remains a centre of excellence for in-orbit testing of telecommunications satellites.
