Hot dry summers can lead to forest fires. Careless human behaviour often increases the risk. The 2009 fires in Greece, which were made worse by strong winds, destroyed thousands of hectares of forest, farmland and olive groves, resulting in many people being evacuated from their homes. Satellites allow these crisis situations to be carefully monitored and mapped, at both regional and global scales.
