Der deutsche ESA-Astronaut Alexander Gerst berichtete am 8. Mai 2015 im Audimax der Universität Hamburg von seiner sechsmonatigen "Blue Dot"-Mission zur Internationalen Raumstation ISS. Vor seiner Ausbildung zum Astronauten hatte Alexander Gerst fünf Jahre lang an der Universität Hamburg geforscht und gearbeitet. Am Institut für Geophysik erlangte er im Jahr 2010 seinen Doktortitel mit Untersuchungen zur Eruptionsdynamik des antarktischen Vulkans Mount Erebus.
