Arctic sea-ice extent

This animation shows the average extent of sea ice in the Arctic from 1979 until 2022. The demise of sea ice has reached unprecedented low levels in recent years. As more ice disappears, the exposed dark ocean surface absorbs more heat, leading to further warming and ice loss.
