Plastic waste and the Black Sea

In this project, ARGANS aimed to identify both floating rafts of marine litter and sites of legal and illegal consolidated waste on land, providing information on both source and output, combining both Earth observation processors using Copernicus Sentinel-2 data and a drift model to determine likely transport pathways after acquisition. The project was funded through the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities. It was selected through an Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP) call for ideas on remote sensing of plastic marine litter.
