Congratulations to the 2021-2022 Climate Detectives teams
In brief
More than 90 teams from 14 ESA Member States and Canada successfully concluded their journey as Climate Detectives and shared their findings on the project’s platform. The ESA Education team would like to thank all the students and teachers who participated this school year for their amazing work!
In-depth
The teams’ journey as Climate Detectives began in September 2021. Students identified and investigated local problems related to climate and their local environment. As real scientists, they analysed and collected Earth Observation data, from satellite images to local ground measurements and weather historical data. Based on their investigations, teams proposed actions to help reduce and raise awareness of the problem they studied. From proposing an Operation Powerless in their schools to the creation and maintenance of an acorn nursery, teams were very creative with their actions and committed to trying to make a difference in protecting our planet. At the end, teams shared their results with the ESA Climate Detectives community on the project gallery. This way everyone can learn from their work!
LPS 2022 Climate Detectives School Award
ESA invited student teams participating in this year’s school project to submit their investigations for the LPS 2022 Climate Detectives School Award. Two Teams from Spain, one from Greece and one from Belgium were the winners of the Award and had the opportunity to travel to Bonn, Germany, to attend a full-day of ESA's Living Planet Symposium (LPS). The conference is the largest one dedicated to Earth observation in Europe. The teams presented their projects to an audience of EO experts at the Award Ceremony. They also got the chance to meet scientists and ask questions about their work at ESA.
The Award Ceremony took place on the 24 May 2022 in the presence of Simonetta Cheli, ESA Director of Earth Observation Programmes and Hugo Maree, ESA Head of the Education Office. The quality of the projects was impressive, topics like the impact of floods on the quality of the water, flash floods in cities and the loss and change of biodiversity and vegetation due to climate change were addressed. For our Climate Detectives this was a unique experience they will always remember!
You can find more about the winning Teams here and watch the Award Ceremony here.
ESA would like to congratulate once more all Teams that applied to the Award for their fantastic projects.
Climate Detectives Young Scientists
ESA would also like to highlight the great work done by the teams of young scientists (from 8 to 11 years old). This school year a few of these teams selected the topic of biodiversity as their research subject. From investigating if changes in climate are affecting the habits of local sedentary and migratory avifauna, to the impact of climate change in bees, bats and mussels farms, our young Climate Detectives are already making a difference by raising awareness of the importance of protecting our planet and its biodiversity!
Congratulations for all young scientists for their amazing work.
The Climate Detectives school project will be back for the 2022-2023 school year. Stay tuned!
