ESA Teach with Space experiments of the day
Join the ESA Teach with Space Online Conference 2022 and start each day with an exciting experiment that can easily be done at home or at school. During the conference, participants will be able to complete the experiments with the support of the ESA Education team.
Fold your Webb Telescope Mirror
Level: Primary and secondary
Curricular topics: Arts, Astronomy and Mathematics
You will need these materials:
- A4 paper sheet
Want to know more about the largest telescope in space? The James Webb Space Telescope will look back over 13.5 billion years ago to when galaxies were just beginning to form. To see these faint galaxies, Webb will use its large mirror, designed to fold up like origami inside the rocket that launched it to space.
In this simple origami activity using just a single piece of A4 paper, you will create in a hexagonal segment of Webb and learn more about how astronomers use telescopes to look back in time.

Yoga in Space
Level: Primary and secondary
Curricular topics: Biology, Health
You will need these materials:
- Yoga mat (not mandatory)
Train like an astronaut in this demonstration of the brand-new Mission X activity Yoga in Space! Follow along with the ESA Education team the video tutorials developed by ESA astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti and Jaime from Cosmic Kids.
Train your balance, flexibility, strength and relax before a full day of activities! Click here for the full classroom resource.
Launch your rocket
Level: Primary and secondary
Curricular topics: Physics and Chemistry
You will need these materials:
- One 35mm film canister
- Alka-seltzerĀ® or other effervescent tablets
- Water
Why do we need rockets? And how does a rocket go up? In this simple activity, we will build and launch our own rocket to investigate some of these questions and explore the physics and chemistry behind it. Click here for the full classroom resource.
