This autumn, the European Space Agency (ESA) is teaming up with Universe Awareness (UNAWE) to bring a group of international primary school teachers to the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. The teachers will be participating in the UNAWE International Workshop 2015, which will take place in the neighbouring city of Leiden between 5 and 9 October.

During their day at ESTEC, on 8 October, the teachers will hear a talk by the Rosetta mission Project Scientist, Dr Matt Taylor, take part in a practical teacher training workshop, and tour the ESTEC site.

UNAWE uses the beauty and grandeur of the Universe to inspire young children and encourage them to develop an interest in science and technology. It also aims to introduce children to the idea of global citizenship and tolerance at a crucial stage of their development – to show them that they are part of an international community. UNAWE comprises a global network of over 1,000 astronomers, teachers, and other educators, active in 63 countries and providing a platform for sharing ideas, best practices, and resources between educators from around the world.

The 2015 UNAWE International Workshop will provide a space for educators, teachers, astronomers, and members of the network to share ideas, techniques, and resources that have been developed and implemented by the UNAWE programme and its partners.

Because of a common interest in promoting science, technology, and engineering through education, as well as the close geographical proximity of Leiden and Noordwijk, it was natural that the UNAWE workshop be organised in close collaboration with the European Space Agency.

Further information on the workshop programme, registration and travel logistics can be found here

Registration is open until 30 June 2015. The deadline for applying for travel grants from UNAWE is the 15th of June 2015.
