The European Space Agency (Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality and the Systems and Concurrent Engineering Section) is organising – in collaboration with the International Space University (https://www.isunet.edu/) - the 11th International Systems & Concurrent Engineering for Space Applications Conference.

The event will take place at the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg, France, from September 25th to 27th, 2024, after 2 editions held only virtually due to the pandemic.

Conference Overview

The SECESA Conference is a biennial gathering that serves as a cornerstone for the space community. Its primary focus lies in advancing the fields of Systems Engineering (SE) and Concurrent Engineering (CE) for space applications. Participants include agencies, large systems integrators, small and medium companies, organizations, universities and research institutes actively involved in space-related endeavours.

Evolution of SECESA

The conference’s roots trace back to the early days of the Concurrent Engineering Workshops (CEW), which was initially held at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in 2004 and 2006. These early workshops cantered around the novel concepts emerging from Concurrent Engineering design centres, methodologies, and practical applications.

In 2008, the scope of the workshop expanded to encompass the broader field of Systems Engineering. Consequently, the event was rebranded as SECESA: “Systems Engineering and Concurrent Engineering for Space Applications.” Since then, SECESA has evolved into a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, addressing trends and technology enhancing the discipline of Systems Engineering for complex systems.

Key Themes

At the SECESA 2024 Conference delegates will explore a wide range of topics related to Systems and Concurrent Engineering (https://atpi.eventsair.com/secesa-2024/thematic-areas-and-topics)

These include:

  1. Innovative Processes and Methodology: Presentations will delve into groundbreaking methods that enhance Systems and Concurrent Engineering practices.
  2. Latest Technologies and Tools deployed within a-hoc Facilities: Participants will discuss state-of-the-art tools and technologies driving advancements in space applications.
  3. Novel Applications: Case studies and success stories will highlight real-world applications of SE and CE methodologies.
  4. Future Trends: Talks will trigger brainstorming and reflection looking into the medium- and long-term developments.
  5. Teamwork and People: Participants will discuss about human aspects, competences and mindset instrumental to dive into the future challenges.

A Forum for Exchange

SECESA provides a unique forum to share experiences, learn from success stories, and exchange ideas. It’s a space where professionals from diverse backgrounds come together to shape the future of space engineering and design.

Academic Collaboration

SECESA isn’t just about industry professionals; it actively engages with academia. European universities have hosted SECESA conferences, co-organizing them through a rigorous selection process. This collaborative approach allows universities to showcase their students’ excellence in applying SE and CE methodologies. Moreover, it aligns with ESA’s educational mandate to inspire the future generations of engineers by exposing them to cutting-edge methodologies and approaches in Systems Engineering.

ESA Academy Conference Student Sponsorship Programme

The ESA Education Office is providing an exciting opportunity for tertiary education students. Through the ESA Academy Conference Student Sponsorship Programme, up to three sponsored attendees will have the chance to participate in SECESA 2024. These sponsored students will:

  • Engage with experts in the field.
  • Participate in workshops.
  • Network with peers from across the community of Systems & Concurrent Engineering.

The theme for the sponsorship application is “The Future of Mission Design”.

Eligibility criteria, application details, and further information can be found on our website at the following link: ESA Academy Student Sponsorship.
