The consolidation of the Ariane 5 ECA passed a critical milestone in May when the Vulcain 2 engine was successfully tested in the load simulation device at the Lampoldshausen test facilities of DLR in Germany.

The load simulation device at Lampoldshausen is designed to reproduce the low-pressure conditions that a Vulcain 2 engine will encounter during flight. The engine tested was equipped with a reinforced nozzle extension, modified to correct the malfunction that occurred in December 2002 on the maiden flight of the Ariane 5 ECA.

The qualification flight of the consolidated Ariane 5 ECA is currently planned to take place from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana in September this year.
