Air quality and pollution
The quality of our planet's air affects not only our health as we breath it, but has wide impacts on vegetation and, very critically, climate change
Projects
A list of recent and current projects supported by ESA is given below. Further detail on some of the project is provided where it appears with hyperlink (further descriptions will be provided in the near future).

SEVESO
This project intends to apply space-based observations together with geo-spatial techniques to the management of industrial risk & technological accidents, in relation to the SEVESO II directive of the EU (96/82/EC). It implies the modelling of pollutant dispersions for the various types of dispersion in air, soil and water.

PROMOTE - PROtocol MOniToring for the GMES Service Element: Atmosphere
This project seeks to develop useful operational services for organisations & citizens that will use atmospheric data to address the concerns of policy makers and citizens alike. Four areas in which services are being developed are: air quality, stratospheric ozone, UV exposure and climate change.

YourAir - Urban air quality forecasting
prototype system providing street level urban air quality forecasts, where air pollution is a problem, thus facilitating ameliorative action. YourAir is part of ESA's PROMOTE project.

POLPO - Pollution Hot Spot Monitoring from GOME applied to the Po Basin
This project is 'aimed at providing the end users (Environmental Departments) a tool to evaluate the severity, the spread and the dislocation of pollution plumes. The emission transport across country boundaries is important for future emission trading.

GlobAerosol - Global Aerosol from Earth Observation
This project is aimed at producing daily global aerosol maps that are needed for accurate information for weather forecasting. Aerosol distribution is also essential information for understanding climate change as well as being a concern for public health.

TEMIS - Tropospheric Emission Monitoring Internet Service
This project is aimed at the production and delivery of tropospheric trace gas concentrations, aerosol and UV products,

DRAGON - Air Quality Monitoring & Forecasting in China
This project aims at monitoring and forecasting of the trace gases ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane.
