When people have to stay immobile for a long time, for example when they are in hospital, their unused muscles start to shrink. The same thing happens to astronauts. In space, due to the absence of the Earth's gravity, astronauts do not feel their weight and therefore do not use their muscles much. As a result, their muscles start to lose volume, strength and mobility, especially in their legs, back and buttocks. To compensate for this, astronauts spend several hours every day exercising. The more they exercise, the sooner they will get back into shape when they return to Earth.
