1979: On 8 March 1979, Volcanoes were discovered on Io, a moon of Jupiter.
They were discovered by NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft.
On 12 December 2000, the NASA/ESA Cassini-Huygens mission flew past Io and captured an image of the moon and its shadow in transit against the disk of Jupiter.
