Hubble's camera back at work
The Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the NASA/ESA's Hubble Space Telescope was successfully reactivated on Friday 30 June 2006.
Engineers had received indications on Monday 19 June that power supply voltages were out of acceptable limits, causing the camera to be switched into a safe holding state. Engineers studied the problem and determined that an electrical power supply had failed. While the Advanced Camera for Surveys was out of operation, Hubble observations continued using other onboard science instruments.
The Advanced Camera for Surveys carries a spare set of electronics and this was successfully switched on. Tests of the instrument status continue for a few days and the camera's scientific observations are resuming in the week beginning 2 July 2006.
