The STS-78 shuttle mission was launched at the end of June 1996. ESA had five major facilities and responsibility for more than half the experiments onboard the multi-discipline Life and Microgravity Spacelab [LMS] mission. These experiments studied the effects of gravity on the human body, the development of plants and animals, fluid behaviour and the processing of protein crystals and metallic alloys.
