    • Description

In the summer of 2001, ESA's next-generation telecommunications satellite, Artemis (Advanced Relay and Technology Satellite) will be launched on Ariane 5.
The ESA TV Service has produced a series of three pre-event Exchanged Programmes with background footage on this satellite.
This is the third programme in the series and concentrates on the three differenct payloads which are designed for three specific functions: * Voice and data communications between mobile terminals- mainly for cars, trucks, trains of boats. * Broadcasting accurate navigation information as an element of Europe's EGNOS. * Sending high data communications directly between satellites. Artemis boasts many innovative technological features, not least of which are its ion thrusters. These will enable the spacecraft to maintain an orbital position without carrying large masses of chemical propellant.
This programme comprises of a 5 minute A-roll with English commentary and is complemented by a longer B-roll with clean international

      SCRIPT
The ability to communicate is not a luxury, it is often
essential. This does not only apply to human beings and their mobile
telephones. Mobility has become an established part of our life, and we
suffer increasingly from any gaps in network coverage, from networks in
urban areas that are hopelessly overloaded, and from spots with no signal
      at all.
In many sparsely populated areas there is no mobile coverage and it's not
economically viable for a network operator to provide coverage. And
because of the technical difficulties involved, Europe's coastal waters
and the Mediterranean are even less well served. Anywhere outside the
normal range of the nearest land station - usually 5-20 kilometres - is a
      dead zone.
But what if there's an emergency? ESA's Artemis satellite is about to
est a new payload for mobile telephony via satellite. Artemis hovers
constantly over the same point of the earth ? over Europe, to be more
precise - and can be recognised by telephone receivers at all times.
