- Description
2001 Mars Odyssey is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the red planet. Odyssey launched on April 7, 2001, and arrived at Mars on October 24, 2001, 0230 Universal Time (October 23, 7:30 pm PDT/ 10:30 EDT).
Odyssey's primary science mission will take place February 2002 through August 2004. For the first time, the mission will map the amount and distribution of chemical elements and minerals that make up the Martian surface. The spacecraft will especially look for hydrogen, most likely in the form of water ice, in the shallow subsurface of Mars. It will also record the radiation environment in low Mars orbit to determine the radiation-related risk to any future human explorers who may one day go to Mars. All of these objectives support the four science goals of the Mars Exploration Program.
This NASA produced Video File contains selected footage on the Mars Odyssey mission including its launch, mission animations, orbital insertion and Mars animations.00:00 Delta 2 launcher on launchpad

This Animation released during the Mars Odyssey Press Conference on March 19th, begins with a global view of the planet Mars created from views by Mars Global Surveyor. The Mars 2001 Odyssey spacecraft is diplayed above a series of globes, where colour is used to emphasize the Martian topographic and compositional differences. A global view of earth introduces a comparison of the difference in resolution between the current MGS TES and planned Odyssey THEMIS observations. Two of the Odyssey's instruments are domonstrated here.

The first major step before a return to Mars orbit will occur with the launch of the Mars 2001 Odyssey spacecraft in April. After shipping aboard a C-17 cargo airplane from Denver DO, the Odyssey arrived at Kennedy Space Centre on Jan 4th for processing. Instruments were then added and tested.
