On the evening of the 28 February ESA's new earth observation satellite Envisat will be launched on board an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guayana. The eight ton satellite will continue a programme of monitoring the Earth from space started 15 years ago with ESAÕs ERS satellite.
This programme provides an overview of Envisat and explains how the satellite's sophisticated instruments will be used in a variety of different fundtions from global disaster management to ozone level detection.

A European satellite will soon tell us exactly how and why our planet is changing. Envisat will start an accurate monitoring programme of the Earth and its environment. This will give scientists a better understanding of natural processes, and politicians more accurate information on phenomena such as pollution and ozone depletion.
