Weather and climate have always influenced life on Earth. Even back in ancient civilisations man regarded extreme weather as a bad sign from an above power. The first weather reports were drawn up in China 2800 years ago, but it was still centuries before the weather could be accurately forecast
As a result, weather predictions were always uncertain and were based on myths, folklore and generations of experience.
350 years ago, Italian scientist Evangelista Torricelli invented the barometer which exposed the presence of an invisible weather force, the air pressure, which is essentially what drives the wind and weather
With the use of barometers, scientists learned about the dynamics of rising and falling air - which are today known as low and high-pressure areas. Scientists began to systematically measure temperature, rainfall and wind and compiled reports about cloud cover and daily weather.
