This is the third of five programmes on Meteosat Second Generation and focuses on how bad weather effects the transportation industry and looks at how National meterological offices with the aid of satellite data are able to provide specially taylored forecasts for land, sea and air transportation services. ESA's new second generation weather satellite, MSG, will aid in the increased accuracy of these weather forecasts and will be a valuable asset in providing early forecasts of extreme weather conditions.
The 5-minute A-roll contains split audio with an English guide track and is complemented by a B-roll with international sound only.The transport business has become one of the motors of our modern society, but still inclement weather, rain, snow and fog are influencing the performance and safety of our transport infrastructure.
Sudden changes in our weather can substantially impair traffic flow, sometimes making road and air travel impossible.
Road traffic is a very weather sensitive means of travel. Many of the 40,000 road deaths recorded annually in the European Union are due to bad weather conditions. These could be avoided
Besides general weather forecasts, the national meteorological offices also offer detailed predictions tailored to the needs of the transport business.

We have also a very important weather forecast for safety on land, sea and air. On land we have based prediction models for example to give weather forecast for the motorways if there will be ice or snow. On sea, we have the marine forecast for shipping, will there be gales or storms on sea, or will there be fog on sea. And of cou
