Like all space observatories Integral, ESA's International Gamma Ray Laboratory, consists of two parts: the service module and the payload module.
The service module is a technical platform, the lower part of the satellite. The payload module sits on the platform and consists of four scientific instruments.

The platform has to resist the tremendous stress of the launch and separation of the Proton rocket's different stages. Then the platform, an extraordinary sort of space transporter, must bring Integral into its final orbit.

The platform also has other essential functions, such as providing power from its solar panels, transmitting data to Earth, receiving remote commands, and in various ways taking care of or ""babysitting"" the instruments during their expected life span of five years.

Perhaps the most difficult and important task of the platform, which was developed by the Italian company Alenia Spazio, is to point its ins
