The first Meteosat satellite was launched 25 years ago, on 23 November 1977. Their images have sine then become a daily feature of TV weather forecasting. Exactly 25 years ago, the first European Weather Satellite Meteosat was launched from Cape Canaveral. Six more of these satellites have followed since. From their vantage point 36.000 kilometers above the equator, they have been watching the earth non-stop for a quarter of a century.

Because Meteosat provides an instantaneous image of the weather, it changed the way we perceive weather forecasting. Transmitting a set of three weather pictures every 30 minutes, these European satellites made it possible to actually see how clouds move over Europe and Africa. (But they also give information about things like the water vapor concentrations in the atmosphere.)
