An historical look at the Ariane 4 launcher made prior to its final launch which took place succesfully on 15 February 2003 from the Kourou space port in French Guiana.

1 - When the European Space Agency was founded in 1974, one of it's first and most important objectives was to create it's own European launcher. The reason was simple... without a launcher, you can't go up into space.

2 ? Six years later, the first Ariane 1 launcher took of from Europe's new Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Over the years ESA built a whole family of launchers, with Ariane 2, 3, 4 and 5. Each of these launchers utilises the technology that was already created for another family member ? a cost saving.

3 ? Ariane 4 proved to be a giant leap forward from its predecessors. But after 15 years of loyal service and more than 100 successful launches, Arianespace's workhorse of the 1990's will undertake its final flight on the 12th of February. It will then be replaced by the more powerful Ariane 5.
