Like so many of the worldÕs cities, Lisbon experiences serious traffic jams every day.
Hold-ups and bottle necks are a regular occurrence on the way into and out of the city, particularly on the two bridges that link Lisbon with the south of Portugal.
This is the Vasco da Gama bridge over the River Tagus ? one of the longest bridges in Europe.

A new system is being tested here that may bring about changes on several levels. This project is known as ARMAS ? which stands for Active Road Management Assisted by Satellite ? and is a system for monitoring vehicles via satellite based on EGNOS ? the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service that enhances the data provided by American GPS systems, offering greater precision and continuity of signal.
