    • Description

German scientist Gerhard Neukum has developed the HRSC camera on Mars Express. Is a stereo camera that can prodcue threedimensional images of the Martian surface with a resolution of just a few meters. An ESA TV team accompanied Professor Neukum in his laboratory in Berlin as he produced the first images of Valles Larineris, a spectacular great canyon on the Red Planet. 5 min A-roll with split audio (English commentary/international sound), complemented by a 8 minute B-roll with clean international sound.

The Story of the First Mars Express Image
00:40 A picture is worth a thousand words. The saying is true on Earth, but even more appropriate when exploring distant planets.
00:52 ESA's Mars Express, which has practically reached its final operational orbit around the planet, has sent back its first fine-detail pictures of the Martian surface, taken with the spacecraft's High Resolution Stereo Camera.
01:07 The camera was developed at the German Aerospace Centre, DLR, with Professor Gerhard Neukum as the Principal Investigator, heading a team of scientists and engineers.
01:17 Gerhard Neukum and his colleagues at the Free University of Berlin received the first science-observation data on January 14. Their selected target had been the eastern end of Valles Marineris, a chaotic terrain where this 7000 kilometre-long Martian ""Grand Canyon"" turns northwards.
